Mayfield High Street

Mayfield High Street

All Phoenix productions are performed at the Memorial Hall in Mayfield:

Mayfield Memorial Hall
Tunbridge Wells Road
Mayfield
East Sussex
TN20 6PJ

This hall is located at the north end of the village (see Getting Here). The hall has a large stage, two dressing rooms, fully equipped kitchen and can seat up to 150 plus people – depending on seating format. – Recent productions have used raised seats; informal tables and chairs – whatever best suits the mood and size of the production.

There is parking in front of the hall, although it must be said that for Saturday nights it is usual for cars to be parked all the way along the road outside as well! There is also a car park in the centre of the village which boasts amazing views! All car parks are free of charge.

The village of Mayfield needs no introduction to people from the surrounding area. It is a large village in north-east Sussex, 9 miles south of Tunbridge Wells off the A267. It has a beautiful High Street with raised red brick pavements. The village sign shows the figure of a young woman and children in a flower covered meadow, illustrating the Saxon origin of the village name, Maghefeld, or Maid's Field.

Like many places in the area Mayfield prospered at the height of the iron industry and much of its finest architecture dates from that time. The "Middle House", in the High Street is a splendid oak beamed Tudor Inn. The date 1575 is carved into the barge boards. Eighteen years before the inn was built during the reign of Queen Mary, four Protestants were condemned here and burned at the stake in Lewes . The martyrs were not forgotten by the community which has a thriving bonfire society. In fact Mayfield's Bonfire Boys and Belles, are one of the oldest bonfire organisations in the country.

The Middle House is one of several places in the village where it is possible to enjoy a fine meal or drink before or after seeing a Phoenix production. These include:
