“When the Devil comes calling”
Over 100 local performers, 3 venues, and a promenade play specially written for this beautiful Sussex village…yes the Mayfield Community Play, When the Devil comes calling is taking place at the end of October.
The play opens at St Dunstan’s Church in July 1914, but it’s not just the looming war that is worrying the people of Mayfield, they have the Devil in their midst, a band of vehement suffragists and Mary Poppins!
After the Church the action moves up the High St to the Memorial Hall before finishing up in the Grade 1 listed Mayfield School Chapel, which used to be one of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Palaces.
This production is a celebration of the Community of Mayfield, and as well as the 50 actors, there are 2 local filmmakers, the Mayzing Choir, St Dunstan’s Jubilee Handbell Ringers, Beggars’ Gate Band, and the Mayfield Silver Band all taking part in this major event.
When the Devil comes calling is produced by the award-winning specialist in site-specific theatre, The Company, and the Mayfield Steering Group, and has been written by Sussex playwright, Suzi Hopkins.
